Hawthorn is the oldest class in the school. The whole of year 6 is based in our class and also some of year 5.
This term we have begun our new topic about Greece.
As an introduction to this topic we took the children to a Greek restaurant where they learned about all different aspects of Greek life including making and tasting some Greek food and learning how to dance in the Greek fashion.
Our first section of the topic will be about Science. The children have been given the challenge of growing food and then preparing a Greek style meal for one of the gods. During this unit they will discover about plants and growth. They will identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants. Explore the requirements of plants for life and growth. Investigate the way in which water is transported within plants. Look at the role of flowers in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal. Furthermore, they will relate knowledge of plants to studies of evolution and inheritance and all living things.
Next our focus will turn to Greek geography. We will investigate the position of Greece in the world and what it is like to live in Greece. Children will prepare their own holiday video promoting Greece, talking about different aspects of the geography of the country with a focus on identifying the main physical and human features.
We will also be looking at Greek history and Ancient Greece. The children will begin by examining the life of Alexander the Great. We will then move onto looking at the beginnings of democracy in Greece and the children will get the chance to plan and put into place their own democracy.
Finally we will be looking at the Greek Gods, creating their own version of the Parthenon and exploring Greek theatre.
